I was hired at Buckle, I have retail experience but not selling clothes. I guess what advice do you people have when it comes to trying to ';sell'; clothes? Plus its commision, (paid minimum wage) and there can be 5 employess in the store at a time so its like everyone are like sharks on the customers. Please help me with your tips. Im not sure if I am up to being a shark.I need advice from people who work in clothing stores?
Don't be too pushy with people. Shoppers don't like getting asked if they need help all the time. You can be agressive in another way. just ask them how they are doing today and if they're enjoying their day instead of if they need help with the clothes.. Start up a conversation that way you wont look like you're trying to sell.I need advice from people who work in clothing stores?
From working in retail for years now I think it is better not to be too pushy to the customers but continue to check up with them regularly make a little small talk and smile sincerely. Know about your products and know regularly asked questions people do not like waiting every time they try to ask you something they will go to some one else. Most of all when they actually are looking for something ask them questions about what they want what size they need and then give them options. Show them also what might look great with what they are buying.
When a customer
asks you if you think they look ok in something you may not like it. This is when you decide wether to tell them that or not but don't just say that, tell them why if a color doesn't look good on them say I don't think that color looks right on your skin tone. Then give them something else to try on or give a suggestion like this might look better with your eyes.
If you don't know something never guess always ask. This could get you in loads of trouble. I guess that's it. Remember the managers are there if you need them.
TRY TO APPROACH A CUSTOMER LIKE THIS..... CAN I HELP YOU SELECT SOMETHING??? LOOKING FOR ANYTHING SPECIAL??? THE SHARK FACTOR EXISTS IN ANY COMMISSON JOB....ITS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND RUINS THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE.....IT IS FAR BETTER TO PAY THE EMPLOYEE A REAL DECENT WAGE...THAN TO HAVE THEM COMPETE FOR COMPENSATION.....BEEN THERE
I worked in a retail clothing store. Worst job of my life.
Its funny that you say ';everyone are like sharks on the customers';, I never knew the employees at Buckle were paid by commission. I love the store but HATE going in there because of that reason. Most people don't love having some annoying salse clerk following them around.
It seems like most of the employees at Buckle use the tactic of getting you in the dressing room and then giving you all sorts of crap to try on that you don't even like.
If you feeling uneasy about this approach to sales then this job probably isn't for you. Though sales tactics can become aquired some people are just naturally better at selling than others. If your looking to be paid commission I would go into something like car or jewelry sales....much better. If you are stuck on working in clothing try another store where you aren't paid minimum wage....I mean what if its a slow day and you sell one pair of jeans....you made jack sh*t. Other stores could pay you up to $9/hr as a sales associate.
5 Tips To ';Sell'; Clothing
1.Don't be overly pushy, find out WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTS
2.Recognize their size and personal tastes
3.Compliment, compliment, compliment!!!
4.Once you are understanding the customers needs upsell high end pieces of clothing that you know THEY WILL LIKE
5.Never talk about the high price of an item...instead bring out the perks of the item
There are so many other things to take into consideration.....Good luck with whatever you do!!!
Work on your approach. You might try walking up to them with a shirt and say-Hi,hey this just came in.
I've worked in clothing stores, and hate the commission method of pay.
As a consumer, I hate being stalked. Greet the customer, let them know you're available for any help or questions; and stay available, able to make eye contact with.
Note the kinds of things they're looking at, or see what they try on (most stores make you leave the dressing room to see a good mirror these days). You can make suggestions.
One thing that stood me in good stead when I was in sales was being honest; when someone asked me how they looked in something, and they didn't look good, I would make another suggestion.
For example, I would let them know that a different color would look better, or that a different style of pants would be better for their body type, etc.
well as a shopper i dont like it when sales people ask you if you are looking for something (for example lets say i am looking for a jacket that would keep me warm) they take me to a jacket that is the most expensive one in the store! they i ask if there is anything cheaper and show me items that are like $50 cheaper!
ya thats an advice
make sure they dont leave with 1 item... thats wat my mom tells her employees... dont stick to the customer cause i personally hate that...
I don't work in a clothing store but I know how I like to be treated when I go shopping. I hate pushy or aloof associates. I also dislike people who have little knowledge about their profession or their industry. So bone up, read, learn and be smart but not smug.
If you work with aggressive associates, here's what I recommend. More often than not the customers who are aggressively approached will tune out that associate so watch out for that. You then can make your move. Approach with a smile and a casual yet professional attitude. Ask a polite question about the day, the weather or a fashion topic in the news or whether or not this is their first visit to your store and offer your assistance. Offer to show the last arrivals in the store and always ask your customer if they are looking for something completely new or something to augment what they already have. That way you get to know what your customer likes, already wears and you can really be of assistance. Sometimes, even after you have helped the customer they may not make a purchase that day so do not fret. They will remember you and when they will return to the store and they will, they will always look for you. So it will also be very important that you at least remember their names and something cute or funny they may have shared with you. People want to know that they are remembered and their business is appreciated.
I know that minimum wage stinks and clearly I don't know your economic situation but a nice touch is to buy some inexpensive small bottles of water (if you have a Costco or Sam's, price will help) that offer your customers. Watch out for your co-workers stealing your idea so you will have to be innovative. I firmly believe that the lack of time is not the only reason why so may people now shop on line. Part of those reasons is the lack of common courtesy and general deportment they encounter.
Trust me, I am A SHOPPER! I also freelance as a Personal Shopper and a Secret Shopper.
GOOD LUCK!
all i can say is you're in a tuff world.
you should try to help customers put together outfits...and not just let them buy single pieces of clothing...it will help you sell much more clothes!!
I agree with sweetcandi#
Greet, smile and be attentive all customer love to feel important, but don't stalk, ask if they need any help with sizes etc...
