Hi, I gave up about ten months ago after smoking for 6 years and am doing very well. I find it very hard not to smoke whilst on a night out though, especially when drinking/ drunk; however, as I only ever have opportunity for a night out about once a month, I am happy with this as it's only for a few hours.
However I have another issue, and I'd be interested to know if anyone has any experience of this, or ways of beating it. If I go on a long journey, whether by car, rail, baot or plane, I smoke then, whilst waiting for connections- I just seem to buy a pack without pausing to think and smoke outside of terminals, stations etc etc.
Has this happened to anyone else? It isn't because I am stressed by the journey, I love travelling, but for some reason smoking for me seems to go with a long journey just like a night out.
Any experiences? Thanks!Need advice from people who have quit smoking please?
It may be associated with waiting (for something to start or to end), so in those situations try to read or do a crossword or compose a letter or or a card or anything else which will take your mind off waiting or being idle or bored. I last smoked about 30 years ago and I have to say that smoking was about the silliest thing I ever did in my life on a regular basis.
First step, stop buying them, then stop cadging them by refusing when offered, next step congratulate yourself that you don't need them.Need advice from people who have quit smoking please?
So you associate waiting for something to arrive with smoking. If so, this is a mental addiction not a physical one to the nicotine. How you break that link is up to you, at the end of the day it's a question of (rightly) convincing yourself that you don't need that cigarette.
I stopped 2 months ago after reading Allen Carr's Easyway book. The dude is right - when I see people in public, I pity them not envy them. On a night out, I'll get wasted and in the morning, my hangover feels so much better without the extra feeling of Dusty Lung %26amp; Tongue syndrome!
Remember that the 4 reasons for smoking are:
Boredom
Concentration
Stressed
Relaxation
Non-smokers cope with the above, so why can't you!
Maybe you are really not quite ready to stop yet, i gave up 6 months ago after 40+ years of smoking and am now kicking myself for nor doing it earlier as i might still have two legs, as i had my left leg amputated above the knee and some bowel removed due to smoking in 04, so if i had stopped years ago i would still have two legs, if you disbelieve me on this please ask your Dr!!!! I found it very easy to stop which did surprise me and i have not had one since, and i never will again. Try going to your Dr as you can get tablets now to help you stop with some new ones that have not been out that long, so i wish you good luck with stopping and you know if you really wanted to you could do it.....
i haven't smoke for about 25 years. i use to smoke 30 a day. the only truly way to stop smoking. is to quit all together. by stop starting your only making it worst for yourself. good luck.
Hi, I gave up with my partner in Jan this year. So far so good. My partner used patches and gum, I went cold. Although we had one slip, all is OK now. Why not try the gum or a patch for those odd occassions. You are linking the travel and rewarding yourself with a cig.Or try a session of Hypnotherapy.

Good Luck, you can do it,Millions have...
I don't smoke but I read your question and am wondering if you smoke when you are having fun or when you are excited such as when traveling or when having a night out.
Congrats for quiting and make sure you stay that way.
I feel that you have not fully broke the habit cycle. You gave up 10months ago but you are still having cigarettes.I gave up almost 3 years ago my only advise for you smoking outside stations and terminals etc.is not to have any cigerettes on you at the time.Good luck.
My partner is the same, whenever we get near an airport or train station, he wants a *** even though he has given up. I think its more about breaking the habit, ie. he also craves one after eating. You just have to have a sip of water or focus on something else when you get the urge.
Congratulations on giving up, I gave up 3 months ago, and yes I get in the odd situation where I think I could really do with a cigarette now!! I'm not sure where you are, but here in the UK new laws have come in where we are not allowed to smoke in public places (including bus stops!!). I carry gum with me now, just normal kind, and if I really fancy a cigarette I start chewing!! Although now I'm not sure what looks worse lol! You could try that or you may be able to get those funny looking plastic cigs from your chemis they may help you!
Keep up the good work with the giving up!!!
Never say never have flexible boundaries therefore in relation to smoking you are able to enjoy without guilt the government recommends 5 a day
Well done - I have not had a ciggie since mid January - I have tried so many times to stop and finally have cracked it!. Although I am glad that I do not smoke any longer, I do still get a pang - even though I know that I do not want one! You just have to continue working through the triggers - you have done it on a night out and just need to use the same approach on journeys!.
Now that smoking has been banned in the UK - I am so glad that I don't have to stand outside in the cold and wet getting my fix! I hate smoking now!
